Winter-Proof Your Eyes: Expert Tips for Comfortable Contact Lens Wear

Do your eyes feel dry or irritated during winter, especially when wearing contact lenses? This is because the cold weather, windy conditions, and indoor heating can wreak havoc on eye comfort. This leaves many contact lens wearers struggling to maintain moisture and clarity. But the good news is, with a few proactive steps, you can protect your eyes and ensure your lenses stay comfortable, no matter how harsh the season gets. We spoke to our expert Dr Komal Sangoi, Cornea, Cataract and Refractive Surgeon, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central, who listed some easy yet effective tips to keep your eyes healthy this winter.

According to a2016 study, contact lens wearers with symptoms of discomfort are more sensitive to cold and experience stronger sensations of irritation compared to those without symptoms.

How To Protect Eyes In Winter If You Wear Contact Lens

Stay Hydrated to Combat Dryness

Staying hydrated is crucial during winter, as the dry air can deplete moisture from your eyes. Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated, and use preservative-free lubricating eye drops to maintain eye moisture. “This simple step can help alleviate the dryness often caused by winter conditions. Dry eyes can make wearing contact lenses extremely uncomfortable, hence maintaining eye hydration is very important for someone who wears contact lenses regularly,” said Dr Sangoi.

Shield Your Eyes from Cold Winds

Protecting your eyes from cold winds is equally important. Wearing sunglasses or protective goggles when outdoors can shield your eyes from the drying effects of wind and debris. This not only helps to maintain comfort but also prevents your lenses from becoming dry or uncomfortable.

Manage Indoor Heating and Humidity

“While heating systems and fireplaces provide warmth, they also dry out the air, making your eyes more prone to irritation,” added Dr Sangoi. To counter this, maintain a safe distance from direct heat sources and consider using a humidifier indoors. A humidifier helps maintain moisture in the air, creating a more eye-friendly environment.

Prioritise Hygiene to Prevent Infections

Practising good hygiene is essential during winter, as the season often brings an increased risk of colds and flu, which can spread to your eyes resulting in conjunctivitis and stye. According to the Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research, eye infections can result from bacterial, viral, or other microbiological agents. These infections can affect the eyelids, cornea, and optic nerve. People who wear contact lenses may face a higher risk of developing infections like acanthamoeba keratitis.

“Avoid infection by washing your hands thoroughly before handling your contact lenses. Additionally, ensure you follow proper lens care practices, such as cleaning them with a suitable solution and avoiding the use of water to moisten them. Also, make sure the contact lens cases are cleaned regularly,” advised Dr Sangoi.

Consider Daily Disposable Lenses

Switching to daily disposable contact lenses can be beneficial if winter dryness persists. These lenses provide a fresh, sterile experience every day, reducing the likelihood of infection and irritation from prolonged use. Limiting lens-wearing time and opting for glasses occasionally can also give your eyes a much-needed break, especially in extreme conditions.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), millions of people opt for contact lenses, but they may not be suitable for everyone. You might need to avoid wearing them for the following reasons:

  • Frequent eye infections
  • Severe allergies or difficult-to-manage dry eyes
  • Living or working in highly dusty environments
  • Difficulty maintaining proper contact lens care

Dr Sangoi concluded, “By following these tips, you can enjoy the winter season without compromising eye health or comfort. With a little extra care, your contact lenses can remain a hassle-free part of your routine, no matter how cold it gets.”
